NATURAL ALIGNMENT

Natural alignment is the direction in which the rifle is aiming when the shooter is in the prone position and their body is completely relaxed. This is simple to describe but difficult to achieve in practice. When looking through the sights the natural instinct is to note where the rifle is pointing and then, using the muscles in the arms and shoulders, adjust the aim so that it points at the centre of the target. This use of muscles can be almost subconscious and is one of the leading causes of poor group size for shooters once they have started to shoot using a jacket and sling. It has the additional side effect of making the arms tired after a prolonged period of shooting.

For a position to be truly naturally aligned, the body must support the rifle so that it points at the centre of the target without any muscular effort.

The following exercise will demonstrate the impact of body position on the natural aim of the rifle and should only be done before loading the rifle:

Set up a firing point and a target.

Get into a comfortable prone position with an empty rifle.

Aim at the target as though about to fire a shot.

Close eyes and take a couple of breaths.

Open eyes and do not move the rifle.

Notice where the rifle is aiming in relation to the target: the aim, for example, could be high and right or a little low but in the middle (referring to the left/right alignment).
